Let’s be honest…most of us are afraid to mess with our plumbing system, right? It can be a little bit scary especially if you don’t know what you’re doing, and nobody really wants to be held accountable for their toilet spreading sewages all over their bathroom, or for their house flooding and having disgusting things around their home that are not supposed to be there.
However, understanding how your plumbing system works and knowing what to do when unexpected things happen is important. There are different ways to take care of your clogged toilet, and some of them require nothing more than the items that you already have in your kitchen cabinets or bathroom.
Before you call a plumber, you can try one of these DIY methods listed below and avoid most problems by following these simple steps.
Dish Soap and Hot Water
Pour one gallon of hot water into the toilet bowl and add a few squirts of dishwashing liquid to it. Let it sit for a few minutes before attempting to flush to remove or soften the mineral deposits that may be clogging your drain.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
Another option for breaking up the clog in your toilet is by using baking soda and vinegar. These are excellent to use too for acting as a deodorizer and keeping your drains running smoothly.
Pour one cup of baking soda and one cup of vinegar down your toilet drain. Once the baking soda and vinegar combine, they will naturally cause fizzy bubbles that will loosen up the clog. Allow the baking soda and vinegar mixture to sit for about thirty minutes before flushing the toilet to see if the clog has cleared. If it does, you’re good to go. If it doesn’t, just repeat the process once more.
DIY Bathroom Bomb
You can create your own DIY de-clogger by mixing together the following ingredients: 2 cups baking soda, 1/4 cup Epsom salt, and 8-9 tablespoons of liquid dish detergent (add one tablespoon at a time). Pour the combination into individual muffin liners, then let them dry and harden overnight. The next morning, pop one out into the muffin liner and the clogged toilet bowl, add four cups of water and let it sit for a few hours before flushing to see results.
Wet/Dry Vacuum
This is a unique way to fix a clogged toilet. Warning: Do not try this method using a regular vacuum.
First, wear rubber gloves since you have to hold a wet/dry vacuum hose inside the toilet. If the toilet bowl is not empty, use the vacuum to empty the water from the bowl. Next, place the hose in the drain and wrap it in an old towel to create suction. When you turn the wet/dry vacuum on, firmly hold the towel and the hose in place. It should create enough suction to suck the clog out. After using the vacuum, don’t forget to thoroughly clean and sanitize it.

All of these DIY tips can be great for toilet clogs that it is near the toilet bowl. But when the clog is farther down your pipe or if you have a main drain line clog, things might get a little trickier.
