Why a Water Softener is a Great Addition to Your Home

Water SoftenerA water softener is a great addition to any home. It provides gentle, clean water, which goes a long way in helping to improve common household conditions, such as hard water stains, smelly water, bad tasting water, dry skin, faded laundry, and clogged pipes, it can even lead to cleaner dishes and softer hands. With a water softener, hard water goes in and soft water comes out, providing fresher, cleaner water for you and your family. If you are looking for a knowledgeable San Mateo plumber to install a water softener system, James Caccia Plumbing is at your service.

A water softener is installed in conjunction with a brine tank to replace hard minerals like calcium and magnesium with a sodium solution. A water softener system has a negatively charged resin bed that attracts positively charged minerals like magnesium and calcium, which causes hard water in your home. The unfiltered water passes through the system, and the unwanted minerals attach themselves to the polystyrene beads found in the resin bed, thereby creating soft water.

The water softener cleans itself about once a week, depending on the number of gallons used. During the cleansing process, it does a quick backwash, which takes anywhere from 10-15 minutes. It then uses the salt water mixture in the brine tank to cleanse the built up mineral deposits from the resin bed, also referred to as an ion exchange. This ion exchange usually takes about 60 minutes to complete. The system then performs a rinse to wash the salt water along with the hard minerals down the drain. Lastly, the system performs another quick rinse before refilling the brine tank with clean water for the next cycle. There are a number of different water softeners which vary in size and function.
